Raw Cutz From Asia
Raw Cutz From Asia is a collection of feild recordings made by Dave Kadden while traversing Asia.
Tracks 1,2,3: Dana Bharmal singing and playing water pod drum,(Gado) with Naran Velji on Khadtal and Lalji Saya on Majira (small percussion instruments). 1 is an original song, 2 is a song for weddings and 3 is just percussion. Tracks 4, 5 are double Flute played by a friend of Naran's in Drobana, a village just north of Birindiera. He couldn't speak english and we never found out his name. Track 6 is some of the women in Drobana singing a wedding song. Track 7 is from the Buddha Mahotsava festival in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh India. It is Monpa style singing to accompany a traditional dance. Tracks 8,9, and 10 are from Ligu Village, just outside of Daporijo Arunachal Pradesh. Village folk songs sung by the women of the village to welcome guests. Tracks 11-19 were all recorded in a small village outside of Sam Neua in Laos. The first batch was played on See Saw, a two stringed bowed instrument similar to an Erhu or a Rebab. The second batch were played on Khaen, a bamboo mouth organ. Track 20 is two children in a small Akha Village in the Nam Ha Protected Area of Laos. They are singing a popular Akha song, often sung while making string. Track 21 was recorded by a waterfall outside of Sen Monoram Cambodia. I couldn't communicate with the musician at all, but the instrument was a babmoo tube with strings around it, reminded me of certain plucked African gourd instruments. Track 22 is from a Debus in Blenkejeran, northern Sumatra. Debus is a traditional ceremony that involves drumming and religious singing, as well as "trance" dancing where participants stab themselves with knives, swords, axes, and in one case a torch without any bodily harm. This Debus was held in honor of a marriage. Three different groups played and this is the entire recording of the last group, the best in my opinion. |
